Behavioral Issues

Welcome to BehavioralIssues.com! BehavioralIssues.com is a highly categorized in-depth informational resource for all terms related to Behavioral Issues, Child Development, Child and Adolescent. About us.

Child development refers to the biological and psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. Because these developmental changes may be strongly influenced by genetic factors and events during prenatal life, genetics and prenatal development are usually included as part of the study of child development. Related terms include developmental psychology, referring to development throughout the lifespan, and pediatrics, the branch of medicine relating to the care of children. Developmental change may occur as a result of genetically-controlled processes known as maturation, or as a result of environmental factors and learning, but most commonly involves an interaction between the two. It may also occur as a result of human nature and our ability to learn from our environment. Human beings have a keen sense to adapt to their surroundings and this is what child development encompasses.

There are various definitions of periods in a child's development, since each period is a continuum with individual differences regarding start and ending.

Some age-related development periods and examples of defined intervals are: newborn (ages 0–4 weeks); infant (ages 4 weeks – 1 year); toddler (ages 1–3 years); preschooler (ages 4–6years); school-aged child (ages 6–13 years); adolescent (ages 13–20). However, organizations like Zero to Three and the World Association for Infant Mental Health use the term infant as a broad category, including children from birth to age 3.

The optimal development of children is considered vital to society and so it is important to understand the social, cognitive, emotional, and educational development of children. Increased research and interest in this field has resulted in new theories and strategies, with specific regard to practice that promotes development within the school system. In addition there are also some theories that seek to describe a sequence of states that compose child development.

17 year old son with behavioral and drug issues?
Q. Our 17 year old son has had a lot of issues his entire life with behavioral issues and learning disabilities. We have worked with him, the schools, and counselors throughout. He's never really had much for legal problems, just one minor scrape that we got him out of with no record. He finally got a job about 2 months ago and we thought things were going good. Then, we find out that he quit his job about three weeks ago with no notice after having been suspended and even fired once, he begged them and they let him back. He has still been leaving saying he was going to work, but obviously has not. We confronted him on this, and have found out that he has pawned everything he has, guitar, xbox, ps2, all the games and everything and has… [cont.]

A. I went through a really rebellious stage when I was young, too. I know you are hurting so much, and I am so sorry. Unfortunately, you have to let him go. Give him his clothes, maybe even offer to help him move, if you can. At least that way you get to see what kind of a place he is ending up in. There is only so much you can do for your child. At 17, he has to make his own decisions. The only thing you can do is let him know that you still love him, and that whenever he is ready to live by your rules he is welcome to come back home. I had to hit rock bottom a few times before I decided that home with my mom was the best place for me to get on my feet. Good luck and God bless.

Anyone work in a treatment center for teens with behavioral issues? Whats it like?
Q. sorry, i should have been more specific, i am an adult looking for a job in such a facility and was just wondering what other people who worked in this enviornment had to say, but thanks for the concern anyway!
Asked by me - Wed Jan 9 23:06:18 2008 - Psychology - 2 Answers - Comments

A. I used to work in one and I really loved it. I quickly discovered that the teens had problems due to lack of parenting. Few had had boundaries and some were able to do as they pleased at home. They had not learned very valuable skills of coping and dealing with stress. I found the teens very genuine, though volatile at times. It was very rewarding and I liked them.
